The Indian squash community is deeply saddened by the passing of Brigadier Raj Manchanda, a legendary figure affectionately known as the ‘Old Fox.’ Brigadier Manchanda, who breathed his last on December 1, 2024, in Delhi at the age of 80, left behind an unparalleled legacy of achievements, resilience, and immense contributions to the sport of squash. Honoring his life and legacy, he was cremated with Military Honours at Brar Square in Delhi, a fitting tribute to a man of his stature.

A Champion’s Journey: National and International Accomplishments

Brigadier Raj Manchanda’s journey in the world of squash is nothing short of extraordinary. Remarkably, he began playing squash in his 30s, a time when most athletes are reaching their peak or retiring. Yet, his late start did not deter him from ascending to the pinnacle of the national squash circuit. Manchanda’s relentless dedication and exceptional skills earned him six consecutive National Championships between 1977 and 1982. His dominance during these years not only established him as a force to be reckoned with but also earned him the prestigious Arjuna Award, one of India’s highest honors for sporting excellence.

Manchanda’s prowess was not confined to national boundaries. On the international stage, his performance at the 1984 Asian Championships in Jordan remains a significant highlight of his career. Finishing in fourth place, he demonstrated the grit and determination that had become synonymous with his name, inspiring countless players in India and beyond.

Following his illustrious playing career, Brigadier Manchanda transitioned into a role that would prove equally impactful. Cyrus Poncha, Secretary of the Squash Rackets Federation of India, highlighted Manchanda’s contributions, stating, “He was one of the pioneers from Services to take squash seriously and did really well.” His guidance played a crucial role in shaping the careers of many young athletes, ensuring that his legacy would endure in the achievements of the players he mentored.

Honoring an Enduring Legacy

Brigadier Manchanda’s influence extended far beyond his achievements on the court. His contributions were immortalized through the naming of two squash courts in his honor at the National Defence Academy (NDA) and the Indian Military Academy (IMA). These dedications stand as enduring symbols of his impact on the sport and the community. His wife, Suneeta Manchanda, expressed the family’s gratitude and pride in this recognition, saying, “It is a matter of pride for the family.”

Known for his musical abilities, he was a gifted singer and composer, bringing joy and inspiration to those around him. As a teenager, Manchanda once approached a sports shop owner with his collection of trophies, asking the owner to sell them and use the proceeds to support struggling squash players. This act of selflessness encapsulates the essence of the man known as the ‘Old Fox.’

Even after retiring from professional squash, Brigadier Manchanda remained active and engaged. He worked as a consultant at Exhibition Industries in Delhi, where his wisdom and leadership continued to inspire those around him. His multifaceted life and contributions serve as a testament to the profound impact one individual can have on their community and beyond.
