India’s Tiger Population Surges to 3,682 in 2022
India has witnessed a remarkable increase in its tiger population, reaching 3,682 in 2022, a dramatic rise from 1,411 recorded in 2006. This achievement signifies a doubling of the population within just over 15 years, showcasing an annual growth rate of 6% in areas under consistent monitoring. The figures have grown from 2,967 in 2018, thanks to the dedicated conservation efforts under Project Tiger and the measures spearheaded by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). These efforts underscore India’s commitment to wildlife preservation, as highlighted in Parliament.
Government Discontinues Windfall Tax on Crude Oil and Petroleum Exports
The Indian government has officially eliminated the windfall tax on crude oil, petrol, diesel, and Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF), effective November 2, 2024. Alongside this, the Road and Infrastructure Cess on petrol and diesel exports has been withdrawn. The tax, initially introduced on July 1, 2022, to control excessive profits by oil companies during the Russia-Ukraine conflict, also aimed at ensuring domestic supply stability and funding welfare programs. Its removal follows a comprehensive review by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Revenue Department, and Petroleum Ministry, citing steadied crude oil prices and reduced tax revenue.
