European Union’s GSP+ Monitoring Team Visits Sri Lanka for Compliance Assessment
A Monitoring Mission from the European Union (EU) is set to arrive in Sri Lanka to conduct its biennial review regarding the country’s adherence to the Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+) requirements.
The delegation will remain in Sri Lanka until May 7, during which they will engage with government representatives, business leaders, civil society members, and trade unionists, and undertake field visits.
Sri Lanka is among eight nations currently benefiting from GSP+, which offers duty-free access to the EU market for nations upholding 27 international conventions on human rights, labour standards, environmental sustainability, and good governance.
The EU, representing a market of 450 million individuals, stands as Sri Lanka’s second-largest export destination, accounting for €2.7 billion in exports in 2024. Out of this, 85% of goods entered the EU market under duty-free conditions through the GSP+ scheme.
UNESCO Adds 16 New Global Geoparks, Including Two from Indonesia
During the 221st session of the UNESCO Executive Board held in Paris, France, the organization announced the inclusion of 16 new Global Geoparks.
With this addition, the total number of Global Geoparks worldwide has risen to 229, spanning across 50 different countries.

UDAN Scheme Marks 8 Years of Transforming Air Travel in India

India and Bhutan reinforced their dedication to enhancing customs cooperation during the 6th Joint Group of Customs (JGC) Meeting held in Thimphu, Bhutan from April 24 to April 25, 2025.
The two-day meeting emphasized simplifying customs processes, developing better border infrastructure, and advancing digital systems to facilitate faster and more secure cross-border trade.
Karnataka Government Allocates ₹40 Crore More for Mangaluru’s Riverfront Road Project
The Karnataka state government has sanctioned an additional ₹40 crore for the Kallapu–Sajipa riverfront road project in Mangaluru.
This raises the total funding approved so far to ₹55 crore, covering approximately 25% of the overall ₹160 crore project cost.
The project, situated along the Netravathi River, will be executed in stages to boost regional connectivity.
Delhi Government Launches Ayushman Vay Vandana Scheme for Senior Citizens
On April 28, 2025, the Delhi Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, officially unveiled the Ayushman Vay Vandana Scheme.
The scheme offers senior citizens aged 70 years and above a health insurance cover of up to ₹10 lakh per annum for free medical treatment.
The inaugural distribution of Vay Vandana Health Cards took place during a ceremony attended by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.

IAS Officer Vinod Kumar Gunjiyal Appointed Chief Electoral Officer of Bihar
Vinod Kumar Gunjiyal, a 2007-batch IAS officer from the Bihar cadre, has been appointed as the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Bihar by the Election Commission of India.
He succeeds H R Srinivas, who is a 1996-batch IAS officer.
Gunjiyal holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering and brings extensive administrative experience within the Bihar government.

China Successfully Launches Shenzhou-20 Mission to Its Space Station
China launched three astronauts to its permanent space station on April 24, 2025.
The mission, named Shenzhou-20, marks China’s 15th manned spaceflight and the 20th overall mission within the Shenzhou space program, which commenced over three decades ago.
The astronauts and spacecraft were launched aboard a Long March-2F rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre located in northwest China.
