India Initiates First Human Gene Therapy Trial for Haemophilia

  • Marking a significant milestone in biotechnology, India has commenced its inaugural human gene therapy trial targeting Haemophilia.

  • The trial is spearheaded by the Biotechnology Research Innovation Council (BRIC-inStem) in partnership with CMC Vellore.

  • Union Minister Jitendra Singh hailed this initiative as a pivotal achievement in India’s scientific advancement, emphasizing biotechnology’s role in driving future healthcare solutions and economic growth.

Record Cargo Movement on Inland Waterways in FY 2024–25

  • India’s inland water transport sector recorded a historic cargo movement of 145.5 million tonnes (MMT) during FY 2024–25, a substantial rise from 18.1 MMT in FY 2013–14.

  • This achievement is attributed to continuous infrastructure enhancements, progressive policy measures, technological advancements, and the expansion of National Waterways from 5 to 111 routes.

RBI Revokes Licences of Two Urban Co-operative Banks

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has annulled the banking licence of Imperial Urban Co-operative Bank Ltd., located in Jalandhar, effective from April 25, 2025, due to various regulatory breaches and financial deficiencies.

  • Additionally, the RBI has also withdrawn the licence of Ajantha Urban Co-operative Bank Maryadit, which is based in Aurangabad, citing similar concerns.

Amazon Strengthens Investment in Amazon Pay India Amidst Rising UPI Competition

  • Amazon has infused Rs 350 crore into its payments subsidiary, Amazon Pay India, highlighting its ongoing commitment to expand in the fiercely contested Unified Payments Interface (UPI) market.

  • According to regulatory disclosures filed with the Registrar of Companies (RoC), Amazon Pay has allocated 5 crore equity shares to its parent companies, Amazon Corporate Holdings Pvt Ltd and Amazon.com Inc, through a rights issue.
