ISRO and SCL Develop Indigenous 32-bit Microprocessors for Space Missions
ISRO, in collaboration with the Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL) in Chandigarh, has successfully developed two new 32-bit microprocessors – VIKRAM3201 and KALPANA3201 – for space applications.
These processors were officially handed over to V. Narayanan, Secretary of the Department of Space and ISRO Chairman, by Shri S. Krishnan, Secretary of MeitY, at an event in New Delhi.
VIKRAM3201 is India’s first fully indigenous 32-bit microprocessor, capable of functioning in the challenging environments of space missions.
It is produced at the 180nm CMOS semiconductor fabrication facility at SCL and is a more advanced version of the earlier 16-bit VIKRAM1601 used in ISRO’s avionics since 2009.
A “Make-in-India” edition of VIKRAM1601 was introduced in 2016 following the establishment of SCL’s semiconductor fab.
VIKRAM3201 includes a custom Instruction Set Architecture, floating-point computing support, and compatibility with the Ada programming language.
KALPANA3201 is based on the 32-bit SPARC V8 RISC architecture (IEEE 1754 ISA) and supports open-source tools.
It also comes with an in-house developed simulator and integrated development environment (IDE), and has passed software testing for space missions.
