World’s First Supersolid Made from Light Marks Historic Breakthrough
Scientists have achieved a revolutionary feat by creating the world’s first “supersolid” state using light.
This newly discovered phase of light behaves like a solid but maintains superfluid characteristics, allowing it to flow without friction while retaining a structured order.
The research was published in the journal Nature on March 5 and was led by experts from Italy’s National Institute of Optics (CNR-INO) and CNR-Nanotec.
Lead scientist Iacopo Carusotto described the supersolid as a coherent fluid formed of quantum light droplets that preserve their pattern even while navigating around obstacles.
