SIDBI to Inject $800 Million into Climate Fund for Small Enterprises

  • The Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) is preparing to finalize an agreement with the Green Climate Fund (GCF) by mid-May 2025.

  • This partnership is aimed at supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in shifting to climate-resilient and low-emission technologies.

  • SIDBI is expected to contribute $800 million toward forming a $1 billion climate-focused fund, a significant portion of which will be externally sourced.

  • As highlighted in the Economic Survey 2024-25, MSMEs account for around 30% of India’s GDP but are also substantial emitters of greenhouse gases and are particularly vulnerable to climate impacts.

  • According to the International Energy Agency, India’s energy demand is projected to surge by 50% by 2030.

  • The Green Climate Fund approved $215.6 million in July 2024 for the Financing Mitigation and Adaptation Projects (FMAP) for MSMEs.

  • This includes $200 million as concessional loans and $15.6 million in grants.

  • The initiative is estimated to mitigate 35.3 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Adani Ports and SEZ has acquired the coal export terminal at the Port of Abbot Point, Australia.

  • The $2.4 billion deal was executed in a non-cash format.

  • The acquisition was made by purchasing Abbot Point Port Holdings (APPH), Singapore, from Carmichael Rail and Port Singapore Holdings (CRPSHPL).

  • APPH controls and manages the North Queensland Export Terminal, with a capacity of 50 million tonnes per annum.
