DPS Wetland in Navi Mumbai Declared Flamingo Conservation Reserve

    • The Maharashtra State Board of Wildlife (SBWL) has designated the DPS wetland in Navi Mumbai as a Flamingo Conservation Reserve.

    • This decision was made during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, which was also attended by Forest Minister Ganesh Naik and other senior officials.

    • Kishor Rithe, Director of the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), mentioned that BNHS and various local groups had advocated for this move through formal submissions.

    • The preservation of the DPS lake is anticipated to lower the likelihood of bird strikes, thereby improving air safety in the vicinity of the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport.

      Vizhinjam International Seaport to be Inaugurated by PM Modi

      • Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Vizhinjam International Seaport near Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, on May 2, 2025.

      • This port is India’s first semi-automated and truly deep-water international container transshipment facility.

      • The project represents a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) involving the Government of Kerala, the Central Government, and Adani Ports.

      • Positioned close to key global shipping lanes, the port is expected to significantly boost India’s maritime trade and elevate Kerala’s status as a major maritime hub.

    • A total of 14 tons of pomegranates from Ahilyanagar, Maharashtra, have been exported to New York, USA.

  • Fitch Lowers India’s FY26 GDP Growth Projection to 6.4%

    • Fitch Ratings has revised India’s GDP growth forecast for the fiscal year 2025–26 downward from 6.5% to 6.4%.

    • The revision is attributed to rising global trade tensions.

    • However, the projection for FY 2026–27 remains at 6.3%.

    • Fitch’s Global Economic Outlook (April 2025 update) also anticipates that global economic growth could dip below 2% in 2025 due to increasing trade conflicts.

  • Second Edition of Tri-services Future Warfare Course to Be Held in New Delhi

    • The Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS) will conduct the second Tri-services Future Warfare Course from April 21 to May 9, 2025, at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi.

    • The program is organized in collaboration with the Centre for Joint Warfare Studies (CENJOWS), the think tank of India’s Tri-services.

    • Following the success of its first edition in September 2024, this expanded three-week course aligns with Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan’s vision to prepare military personnel for modern and complex warfare scenarios.

    • The program continues to follow a rank-agnostic model and encourages diverse participation.

  • India Successfully Demonstrates Quantum Key Distribution Over Multi-Core Fibre

    • In a significant advancement in the field of secure communications, the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) and Sterlite Technologies Ltd. (STL) have successfully demonstrated Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) over a 4-core Multi-Core Fibre (MCF).

    • This achievement marks the first time such a technology has been tested and validated in India.

    • The QKD transmission was maintained over a distance of 100 km, demonstrating its potential for secure long-range communication applications.

  • Passing of Bill Aitken, Travel Writer of Indian Origin

    • Bill Aitken, a celebrated travel author originally from Scotland, passed away at the age of 91 in a hospital in Dehradun.

    • Born on May 31, 1934, in Tully Bodie, Clackmannanshire, Scotland, he arrived in India in 1959 at age 25 without a visa.

    • He later acquired Indian citizenship in 1972 and was well-known for his vivid travel writings and reflections on India’s landscapes and cultures.
