RBI Eases Investment Norms for Foreign Portfolio Investors in Corporate Debt Securities

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has introduced a relaxation of guidelines concerning Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) investing in corporate debt instruments through the general investment route.

  • Key changes include the elimination of the short-term investment limit and the concentration limit for such FPI investments.

  • Objective: This policy revision is aimed at simplifying the investment process for FPIs and enhancing their involvement in India’s corporate bond market.

  • Withdrawn Requirements:

    • Short-term Investment Cap: FPIs are no longer bound by the restrictions concerning short-duration investments in corporate debt.

    • Concentration Cap: FPIs are also relieved from adhering to concentration limits in corporate debt investments.

  • Applicability: The relaxation pertains to FPI investments via the general route, covering both corporate and government debt instruments, within the prescribed investment and macroprudential thresholds.

  • Effective Date: These changes are effective immediately.

  • Expected Outcome: The RBI anticipates that this policy move will lead to a higher influx of foreign investments, thereby enhancing liquidity and stability in India’s corporate debt sector.

Manohar Lal Launches ‘Bharat Bodh Kendra’ at India Habitat Centre

  • Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, inaugurated the ‘Bharat Bodh Kendra’ at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi.

Taliban Prohibits Chess in Afghanistan Citing Sharia Concerns

    • According to the India State of Forest Report, 25.17% of the nation’s total area is now under forest and tree cover.

    • India invited all UN member states to join the IBCA.

Government Considers Merging Four Public Sector General Insurers

  • A merger plan is being evaluated for four public sector general insurers:

    • New India Assurance Company (NIAC)

  • Objective: To form a robust, consolidated entity capable of rivaling private and global competitors.

  • Market Performance:

    • Combined market share of these PSU insurers dropped from 39% in FY23 to 34.6% in FY25.
