US Suspends Higher Tariffs for Most Countries but Imposes Stricter Measures on China
Former President Donald Trump announced a 90-day suspension on proposed tariff hikes for most countries, replacing them with a 10% “reciprocal tariff.”
This reprieve notably benefits countries such as the EU, Vietnam, and South Africa.
In contrast, tariffs on Chinese goods were increased sharply to 125%, citing China’s high tariffs on US imports (84%) and perceived disrespect.
This shift in trade strategy initially caused global concern but resulted in a stock market rally in the US.
China Responds to Escalating Trade War with 84% Tariffs on US Goods
Following the US administration’s imposition of 104% tariffs on Chinese goods, China retaliated by raising its tariffs to 84% from the earlier 34%.
In retaliation, China blacklisted 12 American companies, expanded its unreliable entities list by six, and initiated export controls on rare earth materials.
Additionally, China lodged a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO), accusing the US of undermining global trade.
Despite a significant trade imbalance (USD 440B in imports vs. USD 145B in exports), China has refused to enter negotiations and warned of economic consequences for the US.
