National News

  • India Introduces Its Most Powerful Single-Unit Electric Locomotive

    • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Indian Railways’ first-ever 9000 horsepower (HP) electric locomotive from Dahod, Gujarat.

    • This high-capacity engine has been developed in collaboration with Siemens India and is designed to address freight traffic challenges, improve logistics efficiency, and bolster the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

    • The locomotive incorporates the Kavach safety system, is manufactured with green energy principles, and has promising export capabilities, marking a significant stride in modernizing India’s railway infrastructure.

  • Aizawl Joins the National Rail Grid as the Fourth Northeast Capital

    • Mizoram’s capital, Aizawl, has successfully been integrated into the national railway network through the Bairabi–Sairang railway line.

    • Previously, Bairabi in the Kolasib district served as the state’s only railway station; Sairang, situated about 20 kilometers from Aizawl, will now serve as a new rail link.

    • The final inspection by the Commission of Railway Safety (CRS) is expected to be completed post-June 17, 2025, after which formal train operations will commence.

    • CRS clearance is essential as it represents the final safety check before commercial rail services can begin.

  • Government Plans to Procure 0.6 Million Tonnes of Tur—Highest Since 2019-20

    • The central government intends to procure approximately 0.6 million tonnes (MT) of tur during the 2024–25 kharif season at the Minimum Support Price (MSP).

    • This level of procurement is the highest since FY 2019-20 and is intended to create buffer stocks to support market intervention, especially during festivals, and help stabilize prices in retail markets.

  • ‘Vat Amavasya Meets Harit Yoga’: Blending Heritage with Ecology

    • On May 26, 2025, NIN Pune organized a unique cultural-ecological event celebrating Vat Amavasya under the Ministry of Ayush’s “Harit Yoga” initiative.

    • This observance, which coincided with the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY 2025), focused on the theme “Yoga for One Earth, One Health.”

  • RoDTEP Scheme Extended to SEZ Units, EOUs, and Advance Authorisation Holders

    • The government has announced the inclusion of Export Oriented Units (EOUs), Advance Authorisation (AA) holders, and Special Economic Zone (SEZ) units under the RoDTEP (Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products) scheme.

    • A notification from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) confirmed that these benefits will be applicable from June 2025.

    • These exporter groups were previously excluded after RoDTEP benefits ended on December 31, resulting in a gap of six months.

  • Justice Surya Kant Named Executive Chairman of NALSA

    • President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Supreme Court judge Justice Surya Kant as the new Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).

    • He succeeds Justice B R Gavai, who previously held the position and is slated to become the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI) on May 14.

    • Traditionally, the Executive Chairman of NALSA is the second most senior judge in the Supreme Court.

  • Anil Kumble Appointed as Karnataka Forest Department’s Ambassador
