Khel Utsav 2024 Organized by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting

  • In honor of the birth anniversary of Hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand and in conjunction with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports’ National Sports Day 2024, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting hosted “Khel Utsav 2024.”
  • The event ran from August 27 to August 30, 2024, and was held at two locations: Major Dhyan Chand Stadium and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.

Super Typhoon Yagi Hits Southeast Asia

  • Super Typhoon Yagi, the strongest storm to hit Asia in over a decade, has caused widespread chaos across Southeast Asia. After causing destruction in the northern Philippines, the storm made landfall in southern China’s Hainan province, leading to massive evacuations and substantial damage.
  • Yagi is projected to move toward Vietnam and Laos, threatening northern areas with severe weather conditions.

India-France Bilateral Naval Exercise Varuna

  • The 21st edition of the India-France Bilateral Naval Exercise, Varuna (Varuna-23), was held in two phases throughout 2023. Initiated in 1993 and formally named ‘Varuna’ in 2001, this exercise is a key strategic cooperation between the Indian and French Navies.
  • Phase II took place in the Arabian Sea, with joint operations involving guided missile frigates, tankers, Maritime Patrol Aircraft, and helicopters. The goal was to enhance combat capabilities, improve interoperability, and bolster regional security. Phase I occurred off India’s Western Seaboard between January 16 and 20, 2023.

5th India-Maldives Defence Cooperation Dialogue Held in New Delhi

  • The 5th Defence Cooperation Dialogue between India and the Maldives took place in New Delhi on September 6, 2024. The Indian delegation was led by Defence Secretary Shri Giridhar Aramane, while the Maldivian side was represented by General Ibrahim Hilmy, Chief of Defence Force of the Maldives National Defence Force.
  • The dialogue focused on advancing bilateral defence cooperation, reviewing ongoing projects, and promoting stability in the Indian Ocean region.

Successful Launch of Agni-4 Ballistic Missile

  • India successfully launched the Agni-4 Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha, on September 6, 2024.
  • Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the missile’s test launch met all operational and technical parameters, marking another milestone for India’s defence capabilities.
